The PZL Bielsko SZD-12 Mucha 100 is a Polish glider . The abbreviation SZD stands for Szybowcowy Zakład Doświadczalny (Glider Development Plant ).

development

The SZD-12 was created from 1952 as a further development of the IS-2 Mucha ( German  fly ) from 1948 due to the demand for a single-seat school and performance sailor. Władysław Okarmus, Jan Dyrek and Zbigniew Badura were responsible for the construction. A prototype was built, which received the registration number SP-1400 and completed the first flight on November 14, 1953 with Adam Zientka. The tests were successful and so the model went into series production in Krosno , with 14 more being built in the SZD plant in Gdańsk . Overall, this first series, which ran until 1958, comprised 104 SZD-12s. In the meantime, an improved version with the main wheel moved backwards and metal air brakes had been developed, which was then issued as the Mucha 100A in 206 copies. 68 of them were exported to a total of 13 countries, which also included three SZD-12s delivered to the GDR . Of these, the first flew with the license plate GDR – 2013 from 1954 at the army sports club in Cottbus and broke there two years later; the other two ( GDR– , later DM – 2032 and DM – 2050 ) were delivered in 1956 and 1958 and used by GST until 1968 . An unknown number of aircraft were also produced under license in China. The successor was the SZD-22 Mucha Standard developed in 1958 .

construction

The SZD-12 is a cantilevered full- wood shoulder -wing aircraft with a plywood-planked fuselage with an oval cross-section. The wings are designed in two parts and have a spar and an inclined spar. The plywood cladding runs from the leading edge of the wing up to the level of the spar, behind which it is detached from the fabric covering. The cladding of the cantilever tail unit is made of plywood for the fins and fabric for the oars. The landing gear consists of the brakable main wheel (250 mm × 125 mm), a wooden skid on the bow and the steel stern spur.
