The PZL Bielsko SZD-31 Zefir 4 is a single-seat high - performance glider from the Polish company Szybowcowy Zakład Doświadczalny ( German glider development plant ).
development
The high-wing aircraft is largely made of wood and was developed from the SZD-29 Zefir 3 . Development manager Bogumił Szuba provided the Zefir 4 with six instead of four-part Fowler flaps , of which the two outer ones were coupled to the ailerons. She also received a thick fuselage and an instrument panel that accommodated an oxygen system. Adam Zientek carried out the maiden flight of the first prototype (registration number SP-2517 ) on December 7, 1967. The SP – 2518 and the SP – 2519 followed . Two of the three built Zefir 4 made their competitive debut at the 1968 World Championships in Leszno , although defending champion Jan Wróblewski and Mirosław Krolikowski, who also took part, had no chance of winning due to the high wing loading and poor thermal conditions. They could only take 14th or 28th place.
