Jimmy Vass

Jimmy Vass ( James Henry Vass Jr. , Nur Abdullah , born March 31, 1937 in Philadelphia , † September 20, 2006 in New York City ) was an American musician ( alto saxophone , occasionally soprano saxophone and flute ) of modern jazz .

Vass, who bought his first saxophone at the age of 18, had lived in New York since 1963, where he initially had a day job and worked at night with musicians such as Charles Mingus , Rashied Ali and Ronnie Boykins . In 1968 Sunny Murray brought him into his band Hard Cores . By Charles Earland he became a sought-after partner in the 1970s Soul - and radio projects. He worked with Andrew Hill from 1975; he also went on tour with Lionel Hampton . He later led his own band. After his conversion to Islam he called himself Nur Abdullah .
