Jivi Honk (J. Honk) (* 1957 in Linz as Herbert Gebetsroither ) is an Austrian pop and jazz musician , composer and producer .

life and career

Honk spent his childhood and youth in Amstetten ( Lower Austria ) and attended grammar school there. He graduated from high school in music and piano and moved to Vienna in 1977 to study jazz guitar and piano.

In 1980 he appeared for the first time solo under the stage name Jivi Honk in Viennese music clubs such as America Latina, Roter Engel, Die Künstler etc. and played there blues, rock, reggae, Latin and jazz. In 1981 he founded his first ensemble, Jivi Honk & Band . As a guitarist and pianist, he has mastered all styles of classical and modern music. His songs contain influences from jazz and Latin elements, some of which are reminiscent of the 1960s sound of the Beatles and Burt Bacharach .

In the early 1980s, he created his own form of pop jazz and Latin rock with his live band Jivi Honk & The Funkplanet . The first double A-Side vinyl singles “Nothing You Can Do” / “Lovedancer” and “But One Day” / “Space me to the Stars” charted on the Austrian broadcaster Ö3 and were then broadcast by other radio stations.

In 1993 he founded the J.Honk Instrumental Project with guitarist Andy Bartosh and released the EPs "Sunrider", "Moonrider" and "Stardance" on his label Honk Records . In 1996 he was signed by the major publishing house Warner / Chappell-Music Street Austria for the classic rock album "Live at the Garage". The song "Highway of Fame" was played about 1000 times on ORF Blue Danube Radio in 1998 and the band played numerous concerts.

From 1997 to 2009 he dedicated himself in particular to his music publisher Honk Music , which he founded in 1992, and published numerous releases of jazz and world music, including by Friedemann, Anne Wylie, Jim Pepper and Nicolas Simion .

In 2010 he released his first digital singles "Blue Land" and "Maybe". In 2015 the EP "Radiohits 1" followed with a new edition of the first 1980s vinyl singles "Nothing You Can Do" and "But One Day". Honk has been working on the digital republication of his entire song archive on the music label Cozzmic Club, which he founded in 2018, since 2019 .
