João Gaspar Simões, 1963

João Gaspar Simões (born February 25, 1903 in Figueira da Foz , Portugal, † January 6, 1987 in Lisbon ) was an important Portuguese writer of the second generation of Modernism in Portugal. He was also a playwright, novelist, literary scholar and essayist.

Life

Simões was born in 1903 in the Portuguese port city of Figueira da Foz. He studied law at the University of Coimbra from 1921 to 1932 , but dropped out in 1932 without a degree.

In 1927, together with José Régio , he founded the magazine Presença in Coimbra , which became a mouthpiece of Second Modernism in Portugal. Simões was also close friends with Fernando Pessoa, who grew up in South Africa . He wrote numerous biographies about important Portuguese authors, including Eça de Queirós and Fernando Pessoa.

His work has not yet been translated into German.

Since 2010, the city of Figueira da Foz has been awarding the Prémio Literário João Gaspar Simões literary prize named after him every two years .
