João Van-Dúnem

João Braz Vieira Dias Van-Dúnem (born October 1, 1952 in Luanda , Angola ; † February 9, 2013 in Cologne , Germany ) was an Angolan journalist and media manager.

Life

João Van-Dunem was born to Mateus Vieira Dias Van-Dunem and Antonia Sardinha. His brother was the well-known revolutionary Jose Van-Dunem . He attended the Liceu Salvador Correia in Luanda, where he graduated from high school, after which he studied journalism at the Escola Superior de Meios de Communicaçao in Lisbon and later economics in Luanda. During this time he fought for the independence of Angola and was a member of an MPLA cell for the liberation of Angola during his time in Lisbon and the time of the Carnation Revolution . As an ardent supporter of the first President of the Republic of Angola, Agostinho Neto , he attended a military academy in Cuba from 1975 to 1977, and in 1975 he was also head of the national broadcaster Radio-Televisao Popular de Angola for a short time. After the uprising against the overly Marxist-Lenist course of Neto, the moderate communist had to flee into exile in 1977 while his prominent brother Jose was murdered. Since 1978 he lived in exile in London . Then he worked in Lisbon for a few years in the early 1980s, where he began his journalistic career with the newspaper "A capital". Since 1985 he has been living in London again. There he was head of the Portuguese-speaking section at BBC Africa for around 20 years . In the 1980s he was also a co-founder of the Africa Jornal in Lisbon. Until his death he fought for a free and democratic Angola. He returned to Angola in 2005 after spending around 27 years abroad (mainly in Portugal and the UK).

Media manager of a large consortium

In 2008 he became the manager and in 2009 head of the media empire Media Nova , which is huge for Angola and operates various television stations, newspapers, radio stations and magazines across the country. Including TV Zimbo . This made him one of the most powerful media representatives in the up-and-coming emerging market.

Accommodation in Germany

Van-Dunem suffered from cancer, the disease to which he ultimately succumbed. Since he had been fighting cancer for years, he decided to seek treatment in Germany. There he was treated in leading cancer clinics in Cologne.

Death and burial

Van-Dunem died on February 9, 2013 at the age of 60 in a Cologne clinic. His body was transferred to Lisbon and laid out in the Basílica da Estrela . The Minister of Health of Angola, the Ambassador of the Republic of Angola in Portugal and the Consul General of Angola in Lisbon took part in the commemorative mass as representatives of the Angolan state. Van-Dunem was buried in a cemetery in the Benfica district of Lisbon .

Van Dunem was married with a daughter who was underage at the time of his death.
