The photographer Joachim Brohm

Joachim Brohm (* 1955 in Dülken , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German photo artist and professor of photography at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art .

life and work

Brohm studied visual communication at Die Folkwangschule in Essen from 1977 to 1983 . As a lecturer from 1978 to 1979, Michael Schmidt had a great influence on Brohm, who subsequently also participated in the activities of the photography workshop in Berlin-Kreuzberg, which Schmidt founded.

After graduating in 1983, Brohm went to Ohio State University for one year on a Fulbright scholarship and deepened his studies of the medium in theoretical terms with Allan Sekula and Jonathan Green. Back in Germany, Joachim Brohm started working as a freelance photographer in 1984, and also as a lecturer in photography at the Bielefeld and Dortmund universities of applied sciences and at other locations in Germany and abroad. In 1990, a Siemens cultural program project enabled him to work intensively in Berlin. At the same time, the publication “Industriezeit” appeared for his first solo exhibition at the Museum Folkwang Essen.

Various trips then took Brohm to Spain or beyond Europe to Bangladesh. In a book published in 1995, the photographer put together a sequence of images with motifs from different countries in combination with photos from the Ruhr area, which presented his special, subtly colored imagery for the first time in a publication.

Brohm's central project from 1992–2002 is entitled Areal . Over a period of 10 years he kept returning to the former industrial area in the north of Munich in order to photographically accompany its complete redesign into a so-called “Parkstadt”. Thousands of color photos were taken that show abandoned buildings and their extensive interim uses in partly comparative representations, countless found objects such as work materials left behind, furniture and provisional artefacts show the temporal change process of this place with the means of photography.

In 1993 Brohm was appointed professor for artistic photography at the University of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig , of which he was also rector from 2003–2011.

meaning

Joachim Brohm is one of the first German photographers to deal with the medium of color photography in an artistic context as early as the late 1970s .

At that time, this was unusual and innovative in Germany in particular, as color photography was more likely to be assigned to applied areas such as advertising and the black and white print was proclaimed as a photographic-artistic paradigm.
