Joachim VR Heberlein (* 1939 in Berlin ; † February 17, 2014 in Minnesota ) was a German plasma physicist .

Life

Joachim Heberlein was born in Berlin in 1939. He studied physics in Stuttgart and became a member of the Alemannia Stuttgart fraternity . In 1967 he moved to the University of Minnesota to take up a doctoral project in mechanical engineering with Emil Pfender. He completed this in 1975.

He then worked for 14 years in the research and development department of Westinghouse Electric in Pittsburgh , most recently as a manager for applied plasma research, lighting research and nuclear and radiation technology.

In 1989 he returned to the University of Minnesota as an Associate Professor . In 1994 he was promoted to professor and in 2000 he took over the Ernst Eckert professorship . On the occasion of a celebration for his retirement in 2012, 50 plasma researchers from all over the world came together in March 2013.

As a doctoral supervisor, Heberlein supervised almost 30 doctoral students, as a researcher he published over 140 scientific papers and received 13 patents. His studies on the industrial applications of plasma are internationally recognized. He is considered one of the fathers of the International Plasma Chemistry Society .

Heberlein was married to Yuko Heberlein and had a daughter and a son. He suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
