Athletic career

In 1958, at the age of eight, Joachim Helas began to play organized football at the company sports association (BSG) Chemie in his birthplace Doberschau. At the beginning of the 1964/65 season he moved to Bautzen to join the army sports community Vorwärts Bautzen, where he was last active as a junior player. From July 1968 to the end of 1969 Helas played with the men's team of BSG Motor Bautzen in the third-class district league Dresden . He then went to ASG Vorwärts Löbau as a conscript , where he also played in the Dresden District League. In 1971 the army team with Helas was district champion and rose to the second classGDR League on. In the 1971/72 season he was used in five of the nine GDR league games played until October 1971.

After his discharge from military service, Helas joined the GDR league team Energie Cottbus , who used him for the first time on November 14, 1971 in the encounters of the eleventh match day between BSG Energie and BSG Motor Babelsberg (4: 1). By the end of the season, Helas had played a total of ten league games. The season 1972/73 ended Energie Cottbus in its league season as second in the table. Since the season winner BFC II was not eligible for promotion, energy could participate in the promotion games to the GDR Oberliga and achieved promotion. Helas had only been used five times in the league games and did not come into play in the eight promotion games. For the league season 1973/74 Helas was named in the player line-up, but was not used in the point games. The BSG could not assert itself in the top division and rose again after a season. Back in the GDR league, Helas was called up in eleven matches in the 22 league games in 1974/75. He scored the only goal of his career in the higher leagues.

After the season, Joachim Helas ended his career as a professional footballer. He had only played in three seasons in the second-rate GDR league and had 31 missions, with only one goal. He then played for many years in the senior team of Energie Cottbus. He also worked as a trainer in the junior division of the company sports community.
