Joachim Ickrath (born June 15, 1940 in Berlin ) is a Saarland visual artist .

Live and act

He spent his childhood and school days in Saarbrücken before continuing his training at the arts and crafts school in Basel from 1959 to 1962 . In 1962 he moved to Berlin, where he worked for two semesters scholarship in the sculpture class of Hans Uhlmann at the then University of the Arts in Berlin was.

In 1966 he was co-editor of the art magazine " ZAAZ ", which did not survive after he left Berlin. In the period from 1970 to 1981 Ickrath made several long trips in Europe, Asia and America. In particular, the Indian culture found his fascination, he stayed there for two years. In India he studied Indian religions and philosophies. Today Ickrath lives and works in Völklingen .

Ickrath's work is characterized by clear structures and colors. Often it is geometric figures that are repeated and mutated in the process. Ickrath was able to adopt many of the techniques as the most effective for him from the Swiss constructivists Camille Graeser (1892–1980) and Richard Paul Lohse (1902–1988) during his student days. His pictures don't seem boring at all, but create a tension that arouses curiosity and sends the viewer on a journey of discovery. “The artistic activity is something completely different. Ultimately, art is about the search for the unknown, the expansion of consciousness and knowledge on different levels. ”(Ickrath in an interview, Saarbrücker Zeitung, September 1997)
