Joachim Kovacs (2017)

Joachim Kovacs (born March 8, 1984 in Oberwart , Burgenland ) is the former state spokesman for the Austrian Green Party in Vienna and tennis coach. In August 2018, he announced his retirement from politics.

Life

Kovacs grew up in a social democratic family in Rechnitz in Burgenland. The mother is a teacher, the father a construction worker and commuter. He attended grammar school in Oberschützen and graduated from the federal school sports center Oberschützen. He then studied political science and joined the Greens Vienna in 2007 .

In his free time, Kovacs devotes himself to tennis and has been a multiple national champion in singles and national champion in doubles. He also runs the Academy4Tennis , a tennis school for competitive athletes.

politics

Joachim Kovacs joined the Greens Vienna in 2007 . In 2010 he took over the chairmanship of the Greens in Vienna's Ottakring district , where his party was able to gain in both the 2010 and 2015 elections. Since April 2013, Kovacs has been a member of the Provincial Board of the Greens Vienna. November 2015 he won the election for the country spokesman for the Greens in Vienna against Georg Prack . In 2016 he gave up the chairmanship of the Ottakringer Greens due to the new function as state spokesman.

Kovacs sees his political goals in the expansion of social security, support for marginalized groups and young people and in environmental policy. During his time as chairman of the Ottakringer Greens, he called for the expansion of playgrounds, an additional youth center, the renaming of street names with a Nazi past, the construction of a photovoltaic system on the Steinhof fire station and the preservation or upgrading of public space. He gained notoriety in Austria through his self-experiment to get by on € 7.50 a day for a month - based on the amount that is available to people in Austria who live in minimum income. His request to Austrian politicians, especially the ÖVP , to undertake a corresponding self-experiment, made the headlines. What he had left over from his higher income during the self- experiment he donated to the Neunerhaus . Several times he called for the introduction of a vacancy tax to avoid property speculation.

When in 2015 the SPÖ prevented a change in the electoral law in Vienna, which favors the major parties, by enticing away the green mandate Senol Akkilic , he spoke out in favor of terminating the coalition.

In the dispute between the Young Greens and the mother party in March 2017, he spoke out in favor of the Young Greens remaining as a youth organization of the Greens, while the majority of the federal executive committee was in favor of expulsion. This expulsion was later described as one of the reasons for the disastrous performance of the Greens in the 2017 National Council election, in which the Greens did not move into the National Council for the first time in 31 years.

In May 2017, he made people sit up and take notice when he called for May 8, Liberation Day , as an additional public holiday for all of Europe.

In the 2017 National Council election campaign, he attacked Sebastian Kurz directly on several occasions , accusing him, among other things, of the fact that his methods were a danger to democracy. After the Greens narrowly missed re-entry into the National Council in the 2017 National Council election, as they received 2/3 fewer votes than in the last National Council election, it was mainly Joachim Kovacs who tried to encourage the Vienna Greens to restart and create a mood of hope produce.

In August 2018, as part of the first announcement of his candidacy for the top election of the Vienna Greens , Kovacs announced his retirement from politics because he wanted to devote more time to his family in the future. Peter Kristöfel was elected as his successor as state spokesman in December 2018.
