After his return to Lübeck, he entered the trading business of the merchant Johann Zitschy, an uncle on his mother's side. He found his trading partners in Denmark and Livonia. As a businessman, he was a member of the Lübeck Schonenfahrer . On a proposal from their ranks, he was elected to the city council in 1732.
