Joachim von Roebel

Joachim von Roebel (* 1515 ; † 1572 in Spandau ) was Kurbrandenburg and Electorate of Saxony and lastly an Imperial Field Marshal and Privy Councilor of War.

Life

Roebel comes from an old Brandenburg family. His parents were Hans von Roebel , heir to Buch and Friedland, (* around 1485; † 1563) and Dorothea von Biesenbrow . Joachim von Roebel entered military service at an early age. He took part in the campaigns in Denmark , Holstein , France and Hungary and was later a colonel with Duke Moritz of Saxony . From 1547 to 1564 he was official of Schweinitz , Lochau , Jessen and Seyda . At the siege of Magdeburg in 1553 he was in command of the Saxon troops, and in the war against the emperor he was able to conquer the Tyrolean hermitage. He also fought in the battle of Sievershausen . When Elector August of Saxony took over the government, he dismissed all troops. Only Colonel Roebel stayed and was appointed a secret war council, an office he also held at the Brandenburg court. Financially he was well provided for, because in 1564 he was able to buy the Friedland monastery and its lands.

In 1567 he helped to conquer the Grimmenstein Fortress . The Kaiser then appointed him field marshal. The last thing he did was to conquer Gotha for Elector August. He died in Spandau in 1572 , where his brother Zacharias († 1576) was in command. He was buried in the local St. Nikolai Church , as was his brother later.
