Joan Dickson

Joan Katharine Balfour Dickson (born December 21, 1921 in Edinburgh , † October 9, 1994 in London ) was a British cellist and important music teacher .

Life

From 1942 to 1945 she studied cello with Ivor James at the Royal College of Music in London and later with Pierre Fournier in Paris. From 1948 to 1950 she worked in the Andre Mangeot Quartet. She then learned from Enrico Mainardi in Rome, Salzburg and Lucerne. In 1954 she became a professor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music. In 1957 she played with the London Symphony Orchestra under Basil Cameron Edmund Rubbras Soliloquy . She has also performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra . In 1967 she became a professor at the Royal College of Music. From 1981 she taught at the University of Durham . Her students include Alexander Baillie , Andrew Shulman , Richard Harwood and Gwyn Pritchard .
