Joan Massià i Prats (born February 22, 1890 in Barcelona , † June 11, 1969 there ) was a Catalan violinist and composer .

life and work

Joan Massià began studying piano at the age of seven and a little later also violin. After his first public concert in Barcelona he went to the study half with 12 years Ysaÿe -Students Alfred Marchot to the Brussels Conservatory . Four years later he was honored with the Van Hall Prize , the conservatory's highest honor.

From 1906 he gave his first concerts in Spain. In 1918 he founded a quartet with the violinist Alfred Quer , the violist José Garangon and the cellist Gaspar Cassadó . From 1924 he formed a chamber music duo with the French pianist Blanca Selva and from 1940 with his wife Maria Carbonell . He appeared regularly as an orchestral soloist with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona (1910–1925) under the direction of Joan Lamote de Grignon . He founded and directed the Orquestra de Cambra Joan Massià ("Chamber Orchestra Joan Massià").

As a music pedagogue, from 1943 on he took the chair for chamber music at the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona, which was specially set up for him . From 1959 he also held a chair for violin at this conservatory. Here he trained violinists such as Montserrat Cervera , Xavier Turull , Gonçal Comellas and Gerard Claret .

His Impressionist collection of piano pieces Notas de Estío (“Notes from the Summer”), which are often reminiscent of Catalan folk music, is considered a representative work .
