Joanie Sommers
Joanie Sommers (* 24 February 1941 as Joan Drost in Buffalo , New York ) is an American singer, who in the 1960s records with pop songs published. As an actress, she was best known in television roles.
Artistic career
Joanie Sommers grew up as Joan Drost in Buffalo, and in 1954 her family moved to Santa Monica , California . There she became a singer in the high school band. Discovered by a talent scout, she released her first song on record in 1959 under her stage name Joanie Sommers. The record company Warner Bros. let her sing the duet Like I Love You on a single with actor Edd Byrnes . After Warner Bros. produced two promotional singles with Joanie Sommers , she got a decent recording deal in 1960, and in May her first official solo single was released. With the A-side title One Boy , she immediately made her debut in the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billbord . The song was there for nine weeks and rose to 54th place. After that, Sommers had to wait two years for their next record success. On May 26, 1962, Billboard listed their title Johnny Get Angry for the first time on the Hot 100, which subsequently rose to 7th place. It was in the Hot 100 for 14 weeks and became Sommer's most successful song. In the same year she had another Hot 100 title (94th) with When the Boys Get Together , it was also her last chart listing. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. continued to produce singles and long-playing records with her regularly until 1965 . Until 1970, Sommers released a few more records on various labels, after which she ended her recording career. In addition to the music recordings, she also produced numerous commercials for the soft drink Pepsi , with which she became known as the "Pepsi Girl". In the 1980s she returned to the music business with public appearances.
In parallel to her recording career, Joanie Sommers built another career as an actress. In 1960 she took on her first role in the television series 77 Sunset Strip , after which she appeared in numerous other TV series, including the series ABC Stage 67 (1966) and Crazy Wilder West (1969), which became famous in Germany . The television films Die Maus auf der Mayflower (1968) and Lucy & Desi - Behind the Scenes (1991) were also broadcast in Germany, in which Sommers took part as well as in the movie A daredevil daredevil (1964).
