Joanna Grudzińska
Joanna Grudzińska (born May 17, 1795 in Poznań , † November 29, 1831 in Tsarskoe Selo near Saint Petersburg ) was a Polish noblewoman, mistress and later the second wife of the Russian Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich Romanov .
Life
Joanna Grudzińska was the youngest daughter of three children of the governor of Chodzież , Anton Grudziński. Joanna was considered precocious, intelligent, and a real beauty.
At a ball in honor of the Russian Tsar Alexander I (1815) she met his younger brother, Grand Duke Konstantin Pawlowitsch Romanow (1779-1831), and shortly afterwards entered into a liaison with him . The marriage of Grand Duke Constantine, which had existed since 1796, to Princess Juliane of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1781–1860), a sister of the Belgian King Leopold I , had not been successful. Juliane had fled Russia to settle in Bern in 1813 . In order to be able to enter into a new marriage with Joanna, the Grand Duke declared in a secret file dated January 14, 1822 that he was renouncing the succession while Alexander I was still alive.
On May 24, 1820, Joanna Grudzińska married Grand Duke Konstantin Pawlowitsch, second son of Tsar Paul I and his second wife, Princess Sophie Dorothee von Württemberg in Saint Petersburg . The marriage remained childless. With the decree of Tsar Alexander of July 4, 1820, former Łowicz possessions of the Primasse went to his brother, the Grand Duke Constantine, who was granted leasehold rights. On July 20, 1820, his wife, Joanna Grudzińska, was made princess of Łowicz. During the November uprising in 1830, Joanna Grudzińska was considered a traitor by the Poles because she was loyal to her husband. It is interesting that her twin sister Maria was married to the responsible General Dezydery Chłapowski .
The couple fled to Białystok and in June 1831 Grand Duke Constantine died of cholera . His widow had his body transferred to Saint Petersburg, where she also died of the disease on November 17, 1831. In 1929, her remains were reburied and reburied next to her twin sister and her husband in Rąbin near Śrem .
