Joanny-Philippe Lagrula

Joanny-Philippe Lagrula (* 1870 ; † 1950 ) was a French astronomer .

Life

In 1901 he received his doctorate in Lyon with the dissertation Étude sur les occultations d'amas d'étoiles par la Lune avec un catalog normal des Pléiades . The eclipse of the Pleiades by the moon was an important event for the astronomers of the time, which helped to compare the actual position of the moon with the predicted one. Lagrula initially worked at the Lyon observatory . In 1906 he became director of the Quito Observatory in Ecuador, South America, for a few years . He then worked at the Nice Observatory until 1924 and then moved to the Algiers Observatory , where he succeeded François Gonnessiat director in 1931 . His career followed that of Gonnessiat, who had also previously worked in Lyon, Quito and Algiers .

Honors

Joanny-Philippe Lagrula discovered the asteroid Lumière on January 6, 1914 . The asteroid Lagrula was named after him.
