François Gonnessiat

François Gonnessiat (born May 22, 1856 in Nurieux-Volognat , † October 18, 1934 ) was a French astronomer .
Gonnessiat initially worked at the Lyon observatory . In 1901 he became director of the Quito Observatory in Ecuador , South America , where he carried out geodetic studies. A few years later he took over the management of the Algiers Observatory , which he was director from 1908 to 1931. In 1916 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences .
Gonnessiat primarily explored and observed comets . During his time in Algiers , however, he also succeeded in discovering two asteroids. In recognition of his work, the asteroid (1177) Gonnessia was named after him.
