Joaquim Mattoso Câmara Júnior

Joaquim Mattoso Câmara Júnior (born April 13, 1904 in Rio de Janeiro , † February 4, 1970 ibid) was a Brazilian Romance scholar , Lusitanist and linguist.

life and work

Câmara studied architecture, later law, but taught Portuguese and Latin at Colégio Pedro II and elsewhere from 1928 . In 1937 he studied at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro with Georges Millardet with a degree in Latin and Romance philology. From 1938 he taught linguistics at the same university. From 1943 to 1944 he studied on a Rockefeller Scholarship at Columbia University in New York (with Louis Herbert Gray , Roman Jakobson and Giuliano Bonfante ) and also met Leonard Bloomfield at Yale University . He was a founding member of the Linguistic Circle of New York (later International Linguistic Association).

Câmara received his doctorate in 1949 at the Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia in Rio de Janeiro with the thesis Para o estudo da fonêmica portuguesa (Rio de Janeiro 1953, most recently in 2008) and in 1952 with the writing Contribuição para uma estilística da língua portuguesa (Rio de Janeiro 1952 , most recently 2004). Câmara was the pioneer of modern structural linguistics in Brazil , but did not achieve the establishment of a chair in linguistics and died as an associate professor (professor adjunto) at his university. He also taught at the Universidade Santa Úrsula , the Universidade Católica de Petrópolis and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro .

Câmara was a founding member of the Academia Brasileira de Filologia (1944), corresponding member of the Academia de Ciências de Lisboa and President of the Asociación de Lingüística y Filología de América Latina.
