Jobst from Randow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jobst von Randow (* 1506 ; † September 15, 1551 ) was the landowner and fief of the Archbishop of Magdeburg . He is the last common progenitor of both lines of the family.

Life

Jobst von Randau's date of birth is not known; According to the age on his epitaph, his year of birth is calculated as 1506. He first appeared in a document in 1530, when he reported to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg to take up the fiefdom of his father Albrecht, who has since died. Since he is unable to submit a feudal letter - as far as he knows his guardians would have handed this over to the episcopal chancellery - there is a protracted dispute over the registration that lasts about three years.

Thirteen years later - on October 20, 1546 - the dispute has apparently been resolved, because when Archbishop Johann Albrecht takes office , Randow will be awarded all fiefdoms "like his father Albrecht von Randaw and he ... had to lean them" again. Randow is arguably quite wealthy at this time. In any case, on February 2, 1536, together with many others, he vouched for a loan of 21,400 Rhenish guilders from the Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg to Duke Friedrich of Silesia - Liegnitz .

Wife and children

Randow is married in 1538. The marriage is confirmed on June 27 of that year; however, it may have already taken place before, because confirmation can often take several years. His wife is Ursula von Lindenau, the daughter of the electoral stable master Achatz von Lindenau and Anna von Mühlen (Miehlen). Randow has a total of eight children with her: Albrecht, Caspar, Andreas, Jost, Anna, Rahel, Katharina and Ursula. Except for Albrecht and Caspar, all fell victim to the plague in 1551 , which was rampant in Loburg at the time . The surviving sons are the progenitors of the two current lines of the family.

Convert to Protestantism

Randow lived in a time of religious upheaval. The Reformation had been under way since the 1920s, and at some point during this time Randow also converted to the Protestant faith. The exact time cannot be determined. Perhaps this happened under the influence of the pastor Ludolph Rosemeyer, with whom Randow was later to fight out many a bouquet.

Epitaph of Jobst von Randow and his family in the church in Loburg

Randow and his family die in 1551, 14 days before Michaelmas , of the "swinden pestilence". His wife and six of his children die with him. Only the sons Albrecht and Caspar survive, who are probably grown up and away from home.

epitaph

We owe the date of death to a simple, wooden, painted epitaph in the Laurentiuskirche in Loburg with the Randow coat of arms and the following inscription:

Remarks

  1. On the board it says KHETE, but the restorer spelled it wrong. It has to be called JOST-KHEN (= Jostchen - little Jost). This is also the case in old literature from the time before the restoration; (see Ernst Wernicke: "Descriptive representation of the older architectural and art monuments of the districts Jerichow". Halle / Saale 1898 - page 186).
