Jochanan Ginat

Jochanan Ginat (born as Hans Gärtner January 2, 1908 in Berlin ; died February 21, 1979 in Jerusalem ) was a German-Israeli educator.

Life

Hans Gärtner was the son of the businessman Karl Gärtner and Hanna Apt (1881–1952). His father died in 1914, and from then on Hanna Gärtner intensified the family relationships with her sister Charlotte, Walter Ledermann's mother . Gärtner was active in the Jewish youth movement. He studied history at the University of Hamburg and began the teaching traineeship at the Lichtwarkschule in 1931 ; he had his second year at the Scharfenbergschule in Berlin. After the handover of power to the National Socialists in 1933, he was only allowed to teach at Jewish schools and in 1933 became a teacher and later director at the Berlin Theodor Herzl School . Gärtner emigrated to Palestine in 1938 , where he was head of the Ludwig Tietz School in Kibbutz Jagur until 1946 . He then had a management position in the youth aliyah . Ginat was director of the Leo Baeck Institute in Jerusalem from 1970 to 1978 .

Ginat married the painter Judith Yellin (1923–2002) in 1951 and they had two children.
