action

The film begins with a scene that shows all of the Golzow children having a barbecue together in 1995 . The focus is on Jochen and his story is told. Hans Joachim Teich was born in Philadelphia in the Oder-Spree district in 1955 and has two brothers and a sister. His father was the manager of the machine-tractor station (MTS) until his death and had to move frequently due to work, which is why Jochen moved from Philadelphia to Golzow. Here he is in the first grade in 1961/62 enrolled and as part of the documentation. 33 years later, at the aforementioned barbecue, he will happily tell his classmates what misunderstandings he encountered at school about his place of birth. Originally Jochen was supposed to be the main actor, but because he's a bit chubby and has "facial expressions like a polar bear", you choose someone else.

After one year of school in Golzow, the family moved to Bernau , after a total of eight years Jochen left school and from 1971 attended a vocational school for milkers . As the son of his high-ranking father, he could have achieved more than just becoming a milker, but he enjoys working with animals.

After passing the apprenticeship, although problems arise, Jochen volunteered for three years with the border troops of the GDR . He reports on the difficulties and problems of the order to shoot . He never even shot a person. He was also never a member of the SED , but was in the German Farmers' Union and even a city councilor , which in retrospect seems ridiculous to him. Jochen does not like the comrades and system conformity. He's offended in a few places throughout his life.

At the age of 22 he met 14 year old Manuela. She is pregnant by him at the age of 16 and, despite resistance from the family and the state, becomes his wife, to whom he is still married and has three children. Because of the Cold War , he worries that his children will live in peace.

After the fall of the Wall, a West German claim was made on the house in which Jochen lived. In general, the change does not bring him much good. He is unsure how to raise his children. There is a lack of decision-makers in the company, so things are going even worse than in GDR times, when at least everyone still had something to do.

But even before the fall of the Wall, things were going badly in the GDR. Jochen took part in a demonstration on Alexanderplatz shortly before the fall of the Wall and complained that everything was broken. He jokingly adds that he will emigrate to Canada . He didn't do it. Soon after the fall of the Wall, he and his wife lose their jobs. Jochen became a coal carrier for a while, then a milker again. His wife eventually works as a fruit seller. For this reason, it is not surprising that Jochen sees reunification as something bad that punishes the common people.

The film ends with a conversation between Winfried Junge and Jochen in his living room. His wife Manuela is also there. Jochen repeated several times that he no longer wanted to be filmed. This is how the recording of Jochen ends, in the credits some photos from Jochen's life are shown.
