Jochen Poetter (* 1943 in Berlin ) is a German art historian, museum director and curator.

Life and works

After positions at the Lenbachhaus ( Munich ), at the Museum Villa Stuck (Munich), and at the State Art Gallery in Baden-Baden , he was director of the Ludwig Museum in Cologne .

With his concept for the exhibition "I Love New York - Crossover of Current Art" (1998), he was able to win over the jury of the ProSpektiv art competition initiated by the tobacco and food manufacturer Philip Morris and thus enable the financing of his exhibition.

As director of the Ludwig Museum, Poetter tried to unite music, art and literature under one roof in order to support a dialogue through the support of interdisciplinary artists. Poetter's museum concept was open to all forms and directions of art, Poetter understands art as an international language, whose communication character and internationality must be implemented. Poetter tried this concept for the Museum Ludwig, financially supported by Irene Ludwig , but also supported by acquisitions by the city of Cologne, to implement in the new exhibition halls in the Kalk district on the right bank of the Rhine .

“The architecture of the building creates its own order and its own rhythm. You enter a bright hall and the stairs lead directly through the room and upstairs so that you can already see part of the exhibition. You look at the art, you look out the window and you can see the people in the street. This is the user's first impression. He or she does not come to a sacred temple of art, but to a house that is open and communicative. The people enjoy being here. "

In 2000 he was dismissed from his office by the election of Kasper König as the next director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne .
