Joseph "Jody" Lester Powell (born September 30, 1943 in Cordele , Crisp County , Georgia , †  September 14, 2009 in Cambridge , Maryland ) was an American political scientist and press secretary for the White House under US President Jimmy Carter .

Powell grew up in Georgia and joined the US Air Force Academy , but was expelled from there. He graduated from Georgia State University and Emory University , where he received a Masters in Political Science. From 1968 he worked for Jimmy Carter, first as a driver and advisor, after his election as governor of Georgia as press officer.

In Carter's presidential campaign, Powell was part of the Georgia Mafia , a tight circle of Georgia confidants with career prospects. After Carter was elected US President, Powell was White House Press Secretary from 1977 to 1981. After leaving office, Powell worked as a consultant and started his own public relations company . He also worked as a spokesperson for television documentaries, including commenting on the multi-award-winning PBS production " The American Civil War ".
