Joe Hickerson

Joe Hickerson (born October 20, 1935 in Lake Forest (Illinois) ) is an American folk singer and researcher.

biography

Born in Lake Forest near Chicago , Hickerson grew up with his one year older brother in New Jersey and Connecticut . Their mother sang folk songs with them; she played the piano and the ukulele. Hickerson sang in the church choir as a teenager. He later had guitar lessons.

During his time at Oberlin College 1953-57, Hickerson appeared with seven fellow students under the name "The Folksmiths". He earned a master's degree in folklore from Indiana University Bloomington . As a student he had a radio program presenting folk music and performed as a folk singer. During this time, Hickerson wrote two additional stanzas to Pete Seeger's song Where Have All the Flowers Gone ? .

From 1963, Hickerson worked for the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress for 35 years , most recently as its director.
