Joseph Ebenezer "Joe" Shaw (born May 7, 1883 in Bury , † September 1963 ) was an English football player and football coach.

life and career

Shaw began his career at Bury Athenaeum and Accrington Stanley before joining Arsenal in 1904, then Woolwich Arsenal. Shaw made his debut for the Gunners on September 28, 1907 against Preston North End . The left-back was with Arsenal when they moved from Manor Ground to Highbury . When the First World War broke out, he briefly ended his playing career. His comeback came in 1919 and he became the captain of the Gunners team. Shaw played soccer until he was 38. After retiring in 1922, he coached the second team at Arsenal. After the unexpected death of Herbert Chapman , the coach at the time, he took over the post of head coach until the end of the 1933/1934 season and became English champion with the team. He was replaced by George Allison in 1934 . After the Second World War he was briefly once again trainer for Chelsea FC and assistant coach for Arsenal FC. Then he was ambassador for Arsenal FC. In 1959 he ended his football career and retired. Joe Shaw died in 1963 at the age of 80.
