Joe Thein (2017)

Joe Thein (born July 17, 1991 in Esch / Alzette ) is a Luxembourg politician . In March 2017 he founded the Conservative Party (Eng. "The Conservatives"), of which he is the current national president.

biography

Thein completed his school career at the Lycée Technique Mathias Adam. After completing his business school diploma, he worked as a steward for the Luxembourg airline Luxair . He then began studying history at the University of Luxembourg .

Political career

ADR

In July 2008 he joined the Alternative Democratic Reform Party , and in 2009 also its youth organization ADRenalin . For five years he served as vice-president of the latter, until he was elected as the new chairman at the National Youth Congress in March 2015 in Luxembourg City . Thein was also vice-president of the southern district and the péting section of the party, as well as a member of the executive and the national executive committee.

In the local elections on October 9, 2011, he was elected to the Petinger municipal council, whose party won 5.97% (5,725 votes). He served as the local council for six years.

In the parliamentary elections on October 20, 2013 , he ran on the ADR list in the south, whose party won 7.5% (125,827 votes).

Thein was elected by the Congress of the European Young Conservatives (EYC) in Brussels in December 2016 as 1st Vice-President of the umbrella organization of European, conservative youth organizations.

The general assembly of the Pétange section elected Thein as the top candidate for the local elections on October 8, 2017. At the beginning of March 2017, however, Thein's behavior on social media , which had previously been criticized, led to internal disciplinary proceedings against him. This resulted in the exclusion from the ADR on March 9, 2017 . There was no criminal prosecution by the judiciary.

On March 21, 2017, Thein founded the party " déi Konservativ " ( Eng. "The Conservatives"), of which he is national president. On April 10, he was elected to office at the party's extraordinary national congress and re-elected with all votes on January 7, 2018 at the ordinary national congress.

The party ran for the first time in the local elections on October 8, 2017 in the municipality of Pétange and achieved 2.4% (2,426 votes) with Thein as the top candidate. Thein then lost his place in the local council.

In the parliamentary elections on October 14, 2018 , he ran again as the top candidate on the list in the south, which achieved 0.52% (9,516 votes).

In the European elections on May 26, 2019 , Thein ran as the party's top candidate for the first time nationwide and achieved 0.53% (6,652 votes).

Others

At the end of 2016, Thein was portrayed in a 25-minute short film from the documentary series routwäissgro by the film production company Calach Films and Kollektiv 13, as well as with the support of Film Fund Luxemburg and RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg under the title Meng Heemecht .

On January 4, 2018, the district court imposed a 22-month driving ban on Thein, with the exception of business trips. He had caused a traffic accident in October 2017 while under the influence of alcohol and at excessive speed; At this point in time, Thein was already under suspended sentence for similar offenses .

On the night of February 4, 2018, a strong firecracker destroyed several window panes on the house of Thein's residence and party headquarters. The police opened an investigation .

In October 2018 Thein filed a complaint against the musician Tun Tonnar for insult. Thein and his party were mentioned in a rap called FCK LXB . In the process at the District Court of Luxembourg on March 28, 2019, Thein demanded € 5,000 in damages for damage to public reputation and insult. In the first instance, Tonnar was acquitted, Thein appealed.

Private

Thein lives in Rollingen in the municipality of Petingen . He is openly gay .
