Joseph George Vetrano (* 15. October 1918 in Neptune , New Jersey ; † 10. May 1995 in Berkeley , California ) Nickname : The Little Toe , was a US American football poker players. He played, among other things, as halfback for the San Francisco 49ers in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC).

Player career

College career

Joe Vetrano studied from 1940 to 1942 at the University of Southern Mississippi and played American football for the local football team , the Southern Miss Golden Eagles . Vetrano was used by his team as a halfback. During his season, his team won 20 of 15 games. Four games were lost. Vetrano was one of the top performers on his team and was inducted into his college Hall of Fame in 1965 . Immediately after graduating, Joe Vetrano joined the United States Army Air Corps , where he played on a football team, among other things.

Professional career

After completing his military service, Joe Vetrano joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1946, who were based in the newly formed AAFC. Vetrano was employed in various positions by Head Coach Buck Shaw . In 1949, the 49ers won nine out of twelve games. With this performance, the team qualified for the play-offs . Opponents in the divisional play-off game were the New York Yankees , who were defeated 17: 7. Vetrano scored a field goal and two point after touchdown (PAT) in the game . The team from San Francisco then failed in the AAFC final to the Cleveland Browns supervised by Paul Brown with 21: 7. Vetrano achieved a PAT in the final. Joe Vetrano ended his career immediately after the game.

Coaching career

The AAFC had to stop playing after the 1949 season due to financial problems. The 49ers were adopted into the National Football League (NFL). Joe Vetrano stayed with the California team's franchise . He initially worked there as a scout . From 1953 to 1956, Vetrano took on the position of assistant coach for the team. In 1967 he accepted a one year post as an assistant coach at his old college. Joseph Vetrano then switched to the American auto industry. He died of heart failure and is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno , California.
