Joe Watkins

Joseph "Joe" Watkins (born October 24, 1900 , † September 13, 1969 ) was an American drummer of Dixieland Jazz .

Live and act

Watkins played in his hometown of New Orleans a. a. in the jazz bands of Kid Howard , Isaiah Morgan , Herb Morand , Punch Miller and especially from 1946 with George Lewis , with whom the first recordings were made ( At Manny's Tavern 1949 ). With the Lewis band he also accompanied the singer Lizzie Miles in the 1950s . In the field of jazz he was involved in 94 recording sessions between 1969 and 1969. For health reasons, he had to largely end his career in 1966. Posthumously, the album Last Will and Testament of Joe Watkins was released on GHB Records in 1982 ; Yoshio Toyama (cornet), Frank Demond (trombone), Tommy Sancton (clarinet), Lars Edegran (piano), Keiko Toyama (banjo) and Sylvester Handy (double bass) contributed to the recordings, which were made shortly before Watkins' death .
