Joel Shankle

Joel Warren Shankle (born March 2, 1933 in Fines Creek , North Carolina - † April 8, 2015 ) was an American athlete .

Shankle attended Duke University and was 1955 NCAA champion in the long jump and third in the AAU championships in the decathlon . He celebrated his most important success at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. There he won the bronze medal in the 110-meter hurdles behind his compatriots Lee Calhoun and Jack Davis .

Joel Shankle was 1.93 m tall and had a competition weight of 79 kg. After completing his sports career, he became a pilot with American Airlines .
