Johan August Brinell (1920)

Johan (n) August Brinell (born November 21, 1849 in Bringetofta near Nässjö , † November 17, 1925 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish engineer. His birthday is also given as June 21, 1849, and the year of his death is incorrectly given as 1929.

Life

Brinell began his professional career with the ironworks in Lesjöfors . In 1882 he became chief engineer of the Fagersta iron works and from 1903 to 1914 chief engineer at Jernkontoret .

He developed the hardness test method named after him with ball pressure test, which was presented in 1900 on the occasion of the Paris World Exhibition . The 1500 melts shown there formed the basis for systematic investigations into the influence of the alloying elements carbon, silicon and manganese on the hardness of steel. The measurement method was also used to determine the strength after determining the corresponding correlations. From 1902 Brinell was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
