Johan Gothenius

Johan Gothenius (born January 29, 1721 in Uddevalla , † January 23, 1809 in Skee , today Västra Götalands län ) was a scholar, translator and Evangelical Lutheran clergyman.

Life

Gothenius began his relatively long study time with a focus on the ancient languages ​​and there in particular Hebrew at Lund University in 1739 . In 1740 he moved to Uppsala University . From there he returned to Lund in 1746. From 1754 to 1756 he spent two years at the University of Göttingen . Among his teachers there was the orientalist Johann David Michaelis . In 1757 he received his master's degree in Lund and accepted a post as rector in Marstrand . In 1758 he married Carolina Beata Didron. From 1760 he held the post of lecturer in Gothenburg high school. From 1768 he was a lecturer in logic and metaphysics. In 1772 he earned the title of Doctor of Theology. From 1773 he was a member of the Biblical Commission. From 1779 he worked as a kyrkoherde (main pastor) (from 1781/82 also as provost and contract priest / dean) in the rural western Swedish town of Skee. In 1789 he married a second time with Ellika Britta Göransson. He died there in 1809 at the age of 87.
