Johannes Wijnandus (Johan) Remkes (born June 15, 1951 in Zuidbroek , today Menterwolde ) is a Dutch politician ( VVD ).

Life and work

His father was a gardener. Johan Remkes attended primary school in Sappemeer . Then he went to the high school of Hoogezand-Sappemeer until 1969 . Then Remkes began studying economics at the University of Groningen . He finished this in 1975, but did not graduate. Remkes is unmarried and lives in Groningen .

On April 11, 2007 he was honored with the Order of Orange-Nassau in the officer's class.

Political party

Remkes has been a member of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie since 1973 . Between November 1975 and March 1977 he was also chairman of the Jongeren Organizatie Vrijheid en Democratie , the youth organization of the VVD.

MP

On October 26, 1993 Remkes first came to the Second Chamber of the States General . He was a member there until 1998. Remkes was a member of the Second Chamber from May 23, 2002 to July 22, 2002 and from January 30, 2003 to May 27, 2003. In November 2006 he returned to the Second Chamber and resigned on June 17, 2010.

Public offices

On August 3, 1998 Remkes became a member of the Kok II cabinet as State Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Regional Planning and Environmental Protection . His term of office ended on July 22, 2002. In the new Balkenende I cabinet under Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende , he became Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and Deputy Prime Minister. In the Second Balkenende cabinet remained Remkes interior minister as well as the minority government Balkenende III . On February 22, 2007, he left the government for good.

Between July 1, 2010 and December 31, 2018, Remkes was the king's commissioner in the province of North Holland . In October 2019, after the resignation of the previous incumbent, he took over the post of mayor of The Hague on an interim basis .

From October 12, 2019 to July 1, 2020 he was provisional mayor of The Hague , replacing party member Pauline Krikke .
