Johan Van Hecke

Johan Jozef Marie Clara Van Hecke (born December 2, 1954 in Ghent ) is a Belgian politician for the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD) party. From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

Van Hecke studied medical sociology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and graduated in 1978 with a licentiate . He then worked at KULeuven as a research assistant until 1980 and from 1981 to 1985 as head of the scientific service and lecturer at the Institute for Paramedical Professions (HIPB) Ghent.

Van Hecke was committed to the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP), which in 2001 was renamed Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V). From 1983 to 1986 he was regional chairman of the youth association and from 1993 to 1996 general chairman of the CVP. At the municipal level, he was a member of the city council of the East Flemish municipality of Oosterzele from 1983 to 1988 and as mayor of the municipality from 1989 to 1997.

In 1985 Van Hecke was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Deputies , of which he was a member until 1997. During this time he was chairman of the CVP parliamentary group from 1991 to 1993. In 1999 Van Hecke was elected to the European Parliament for the liberal party VLD . He was a member of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe , as well as the Development Committee and the delegation in the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. After the European elections in 2009 , Van Hecke left the European Parliament.
