Life
Johann Anton Tillier was the son of the officer Johann Franz Tillier and his wife Maria Anna von Probst. Tillier was in Austrian service from 1737 to 1757. He fought in various battles during the War of the Austrian Succession under Leopold Joseph von Daun . In 1747 he became a colonel, in 1757 major general and quartermaster general . In 1758 he took part in the Battle of Hochkirch for Austria . In 1759 he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant.
From 1755 he became politically active as the Bernese Grand Councilor and in 1758/59 as envoy in Saint Petersburg (previously in Sardinia ).
