Johann Arnold Halbach
Johann Arnold Halbach (born October 23, 1745 in Neuenhammer near Remscheid , † June 11, 1823 in Müngsten ) was a manufacturer in the Bergisches Land . His father Johannes (1711–1789) and his grandfather Caspar (1673–1741) had already owned a hammer mill.
He built in 1772 Müngsten a factory to manufacture scythes of steel , so-called "Blue scythes." In 1805 he built the Halbach hammers near Blankenstein and had ax steel made. In 1810, his son Arnold Halbach founded a branch in Philadelphia to bypass the continental barrier.
The Halbachs sold scythe blades and steel for shotgun barrels in France , Spain and America . However, during the economic crisis in 1828, the plant in America was closed. The scythe factory in Müngsten and the hammers in Blankenstein were pledged. The economic difficulties of the trading company "Johann and Caspar Halbach and Sons" lasted for many years.
