Life

Hofner had studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Theodor von Piloty in 1847 . He was best known as an animal painter and was a personal and artistic companion of Franz von Lenbach , with whom he lived in Aresing from 1854 to 1856 in a shared apartment. This gave rise to the so-called "Aresinger Artists Colony". Artists like Anton Braith and Christian Mali also stayed in the place quite often. Works by Hofner hang in the Lenbach Museum in Schrobenhausen, in the Neue Pinakothek Munich and the Kunsthalle Hamburg. His painting The Young Shepherdess from 1866 is probably one of the most famous works .

After Lenbach's return from Weimar in 1862, they both worked together again, with Lenbach sometimes making backgrounds for Hofner's pictures. Hofner's works were shown several times at exhibitions, including in the Munich Glass Palace or at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867. From 1880 he moved to Munich, but visited his hometown regularly.
