Johann Baptist Leonhard Rieder (born February 22, 1815 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † 1902 ) was a lawyer and mayor of Freiburg from January 1850 to June 1852 .

Life

Johann Baptist Leonhard Rieder was the third child of the Freiburg master blacksmith Johann Baptist Rieder (died on July 15, 1816) and Maria Josepha's stepfather.

After the suppression of the Baden Revolution at the end of July 1849, martial law prevailed in Baden until September 1851. Since elections were forbidden, the government director of the Upper Rhine District August von Marschall appointed the bailiff in Jestetten Johann Baptist Rieder mayor of Freiburg in January 1850 . But Rieder was not interested in the office in difficult times and had to be forced to accept it under threat of "police action".

The population suffered from billeting, Freiburg was heavily in debt. Rieder arranged the city's finances. On December 9, 1851, a large committee confirmed Rieder as mayor and a majority elected him for one term of office.

During Rieder's tenure, the town hall was renovated, the sidewalks were paved with Rhine pebbles and gas lighting was introduced.

But Rieder did not love his post and wanted to return to civil service. When he was appointed head of the Engen district office in June 1852, after several submissions , he resigned from the mayor's office. The position initially remained vacant because two consecutive candidates did not accept your election. The pre-revolutionary Friedrich Wagner took over the post of mayor again in October 1852, but only on the condition that he could resign at any time.
