Johann Baptist Samber

Johann Baptist Samber (born May 10, 1654 in Salzburg ; † September 19, 1717 ibid) was an Austrian music theorist and organist from the Archbishopric of Salzburg .

Life

From around 1660 Johann Baptist Samber was a choir boy at the Kapellhaus and a student of Andreas Hofer and Georg Muffat . At times he studied at the University of Salzburg .
In 1693 he succeeded the parish and cathedral organist Hans Jacob Raiff (born August 2, 1624 in Salzburg; † January 14, 1693 there), whom he had represented from 1689. In addition, he taught as a respected teacher at the Kapellhaus. Samber died on September 19, 1717 in Salzburg and was buried in the Sebastian cemetery.
His writings offer information on performance practice, organ music and organ building , figured bass , counterpoint , musical rhetoric and solmization .
