Johann Bergmann von Olpe (* between 1455 and 1460 in Olpe ; † before February 20, 1532 in Basel ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and publisher . Among other things, he published the Ship of Fools by Sebastian Brant .

Life

Johann Bergmann von Olpe probably studied in Basel and was then a priest and chaplain at the cathedral monastery there as well as an episcopal collector. Between 1483 and 1524 he was the parish rector in Sewen in Alsace . He was responsible for building the parish church there.

Bergmann had his own printer's mark and apparently his own type material; Whether he also ran his own print shop or had it printed by others is controversial. He had connections to the Upper Rhine humanist group and published works by Sebastian Brant , Jakob Locher , Johannes Reuchlin and Jakob Wimpheling , among others . He became famous mainly thanks to the expenditure of the Knight of the turn of Marquard from the stone of 1493, the transfer of the French Livre pour l'enseignement de ses filles (also Livre du Chevalier de la Tour Landry) of Geoffroy de La Tour Landry was based and his edition of Brant's ship of fools by 1494. its expenditures are characterized by high quality types, borders and artistic particularly remarkable woodcuts, which are not all clearly identified and sometimes the young Albrecht Dürer, partly to a notname named Master of Bergmann's Offizin can be attributed.
