Johannes Bonemilch

Johannes Bonemilch (* around 1434 in Laasphe ; † October 17, 1510 in Erfurt ) was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Mainz , based in Erfurt.

Life

Bonemilch enrolled at the University of Erfurt in 1462 after 10 years as a pastor in Eckelshausen zu Michaelis . Here he obtained the degree of a Magister artium in 1469 and then turned to the study of theology .

After completing his studies, he became a pleban at the Michaeliskirche , whose Trinity Chapel (Laasphekapelle) he donated around 1500. He also received a canonical at the Marienstift and in 1498 became titular bishop of Sidon .

In the winter semester of 1478/1479 he was dean of the artistic faculty. 1482 he became a professor of philosophy, in 1487 received his doctorate he became Dr. theol. He was elected rector of Erfurt University three times. From 1498 to 1508 he was the 19th auxiliary bishop of Erfurt (in partibus Hassiae et Thuringiae).

In 1507 he helped the young Helius Eobanus Hessus to the position of rector of the collegiate school at St. Severi . In the same year he presumably ordained Martin Luther on Holy Saturday, April 3rd, in the Erfurt Cathedral .

Numerous consecrations by him have come down to us, such as the consecration of Gloriosa (which he commissioned to make), the Salvatoris chapel in the Carthusian monastery and the choir of the Kapellendorf monastery church and the choir of the church in Lüthorst . After the consecration of an altar in the hospital of the Brothers of Common Life (Kugelherren) in Marburg, he left so hastily that no certificate was issued and therefore no one knew to whom the altar was consecrated. Bonemilch's successor, Paul Huthenne , did so on October 11, 1514 at the request of the Kugelherren.

When Bonemilch died in October 1510, the university mourned the loss of its beloved multiple dean and rector, well-respected auxiliary bishop, professor of theology, canon, judge general and pastor at St. Michael, and it sincerely mourned it. Bonemilch was buried in Erfurt Cathedral, where his tomb is still there today. In his honor, a small street in the Brühlervorstadt district of Erfurt has been called Bonemilchstrasse since February 2001. Since May 15, 2011, in Bonemilch's birthplace Bad Laasphe, a Bonemilchgässchen has connected the church square from the place where his birthplace stood with Wallstrasse.
