Friedrich Christian Wilhelm Goebel (born August 26, 1812 at Wittgenstein Castle ; † October 28, 1902 in Siegen ) was a Prussian court secretary and local historian. His topics included in particular the school history of the Siegerland and the church history of the old Wittgenstein district .

Life

Friedrich Goebel was the second child of the Princely Wittgenstein Cabinet Secretary Friedrich Christian Goebel (1778–1842) and his wife Louise Elisabeth, b. Feuring (born 1789). He attended the community and secondary school in Siegen, then the grammar school in Wetzlar , which he left before taking the Abitur examination. He entered the service of the Prussian judiciary, where he last worked as court secretary at the Siegen District Court . In 1871 he was given the honorary title of "Chancellery" and retired.

Services

All his life Goebel occupied himself with the history of his home region and compiled collections of material that were praised as productive by his contemporaries and that ended up in museums and libraries in Siegen after his death. But as a result of the Second World War, they are completely lost. Goebel maintained close contact with scholars, especially the Reformed theologian and church historian Friedrich Wilhelm Cuno . From Goebel's pen, 40 titles are known that deal with the subject areas of the school history of Siegen and Wittgenstein, the history of the church of Wittgenstein and the history of the princely house of Sayn-Wittgenstein . With the exception of his now outdated work on the history of the school in Siegen, these writings are still of importance for research.
