Johann Brieger

Johann Brieger (born July 7, 1962 ) is an Austrian diplomat . He was Austrian ambassador to Kosovo from 2011 to 2015 and has been ambassador to South Africa since February 2018 .

life and career

The graduate economist initially studied business administration from 1981 to 1985 at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . He then moved to the University of Toronto , where he did an MBA course. After several management positions, including at AT Kearney Consulting, he joined the Austrian Foreign Ministry in 1992. After various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at Austrian representations abroad (Brussels (EU public transport), Nairobi, Paris), Brieger received his doctorate in 2000 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business . From 1999 to 2000 Brieger was deputy negotiator for EU expansion in the Austrian Foreign Ministry. He then acted as deputy head of mission in Australia (2001–2005) and as head of the team for the European Parliament in Brussels during the Austrian EU presidency (2005–2006). After several years in the Foreign Ministry, he was appointed ambassador to Pristina in 2011 . At the end of 2015 he was invited to set up the newly established department for corporate services in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna. The department is the interface to politics for traditional Austrian companies and for startups abroad. At the same time he was deputy head of the service section with ambassadorial rank, Austrian permanent representative at the IACA (International Anti Corruption Academy) and member of the supervisory board of ADA. Since 2018, Brieger has been the Austrian ambassador in Pretoria with the area of ​​responsibility for Angola , Botswana , Lesotho , Madagascar , Mauritius , Mozambique , Namibia , Zimbabwe , South Africa and Swaziland . The area also includes the Southern African Development Community ( SADC ). During his first visit to the Secretary General of SADC, Stergomena Tax , Brieger underlined Austria's support for SADC's regional integration projects .

Johann Brieger is married and has two children.
