Johann Christian Eschenbach , called the Elder (born March 10, 1719 in Rostock ; † March 16, 1759 ibid) was a German lawyer , philosopher and professor at the University of Rostock .

Life

Johann Christian Eschenbach was the third son of the Rostock pharmacist and businessman Ehrenfried Christian Eschenbach and his wife Catharina Margaretha, nee. Egg brushes. He was raised by private tutors. From September 1738 he studied theology and philosophy at the universities in Rostock, Jena (October 1742), Erlangen and Göttingen. In April 1744 he received his Magister phil. At the Philosophical Faculty in Rostock. PhD. In 1746 he made several trips that took him to Venice and Amsterdam, for example. In Rostock he then worked as a private lecturer.

In 1750 he was appointed (ducal) full professor of poetry at Rostock University, but mainly held lectures on metaphysics and natural law. In 1753 he studied law at various academies, including in Leipzig. In December 1755 he received his doctorate from the Rostock Faculty of Law. iur. both rights. In 1756 he was ord. Professor of Philosophy and Vice-Rector of the University of Rostock next to the Mecklenburg Duke Friedrich , who was Rector's office between 1748 and 1756. The official acts were continued by the respective academic prorector. In 1758 he was dean of the philosophy faculty. Eschenbach died unmarried a few days after his 40th birthday.

A brother of Johann Christian, Christian Ehrenfried Eschenbach (1712–1788), physician and city ​​physician of Rostock, also taught as a professor of mathematics at the University of Rostock and was its rector several times. His eldest son, Johann Christian Eschenbach ( the younger ; 1746-1823) became a well-known lawyer and also professor and rector of the university.
