Johann Christian Gentz (born July 26, 1794 in Neuruppin , † October 4, 1867 there ) was a cloth maker, merchant and owner of peat cutting. He founded the Gentzrode estate near Neuruppin.

Gentz became known through Theodor Fontane's wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg , who devoted an entire chapter to him there. Fontane wrote of Gentz: “A figure like his was only possible in the march, and within it perhaps only in the Ruppin , because he not only had petty-bourgeois relationships (as are peculiar to this county) as a prerequisite, but built his wealth also on something specifically Ruppinschem: on the peat. "

Career

Gentzrode

Gentz was born the son of a cloth maker. In 1820 he married Juliane Voigt and bought a small iron and haberdashery shop and expanded it into a bank and exchange business. Around 1855 he handed over his business to the youngest of his four sons, Alexander Gentz . He spent a lot of time in the Neuruppin temple garden , which he and the temple in front of the temple gate saved from further decay and had it expanded. After his death he was buried in Alt Ruppin .
