Johann Christoph was Jakob Bendler's third child. He learned the mason trade and then worked in his hometown as a foreman . Bendler married the daughter of the council mason Carl Sperling, Johanne Caroline Sophie, who was born in 1793. After 1820 the family moved to old Berlin and built their own house on Friedrichswerder , Grenadierstrasse 25. In 1832 he was appointed councilor mason in the city. He bought the area between Berlin-Tiergarten and the later Landwehr Canal for the construction of villas. One of the newly laid streets was named on November 7, 1837.

Due to his services to the development of Berlin, the royal city administration appointed Johann Christoph Bendler as head of the 86th district in 1826. He also became a politician . Before 1830 he had bought  a house on Unter den Linden 5 to live there with his wife and children.

He was buried in the cemetery of the cathedral community, Liesenstrasse 6 in Berlin.

In the time of National Socialism, the so-called Bendlerblock was built in Bendlerstrasse as an extension of the Reichsmarinamt . On July 20, 1955, the responsible district administration changed the street name to Stauffenbergstraße.
