Johann Christoph Donner (born February 15, 1739 in Gudow , † April 26, 1804 in Altona ) was a German merchant.

Johann Christoph Donner was a son of Gudow pastor Joachim Hinrich Donner (* February 23, 1683 in Mölln ; † January 10, 1748 in Gudow) and his second wife Anna Maria Beeck (* July 20, 1699 in Curslack ; † February 16, 1762 in Gudow). In 1753 he went to Boizenburg and completed a business apprenticeship. He then learned accounting in Lübeck . In 1760 he got a job as a clerk at the councilor Conrad Matthiesen in Altona.

His employer Matthiesen helped Donner to the position of accountant of the "Octroyirten Royal Herring and Fishery Society", which had belonged to the Danish state since 1771, making him a Danish civil servant. From 1784 he also worked as the third administrative director of the "Octroyierte Canal- und Handels-Compagnie", which expanded the Stecknitz Canal as a state company . From 1792 he was the second administrative director in charge of both companies that the king had merged by decree.

From 1778 Donner worked as an authorized representative of the Altonaer Kontor of the Copenhagen Assecurance Company. At the same time he was appointed as the second director of the newly established Royal Exchange and Bank Comptoir as an "agent" in the rank of a law firm. In 1787 the king appointed him first director of the new Schleswig-Holstein species bank in Altona. In addition, on September 2, 1797, he was appointed co-director of the Royal Copper and Brass Works ( copper mill ) in Hohendamm on Gut Borstel . In addition, he was appointed to the Council of Justice.

On November 19, 1772, Donner married Marie Anterrer in Altona (born April 1, 1742 in Altona; † December 7, 1802 there). She came from a Huguenot family and was the daughter of the businessman Christian Michael Anterrer and his wife Elisabeth, née Piet.

The Donner couple had three daughters and five sons.

  • The son Conrad Hinrich was a merchant and banker.
  • The son Johann Christoph (born October 5, 1777; † February 20, 1834) worked as a businessman. He was initially a partner in his brother Conrad Hinrich's. Since 1828 he has owned the JC Donner trading company in Altona .
  • The son Christian Hartwig Leonhard (born September 19, 1780, † December 25, 1840) was a naval officer in the Danish service and most recently worked as a commander.
  • The son Georg Ludwig (1787–1817) managed the trading company founded by his brother Conrad Hinrich and the sugar boiler Donner & Wilder in Copenhagen .
