Johann Christoph Schmidt (President of the Chamber)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christoph Schmidt (born December 28, 1727 in Langensalza ; † October 4, 1807 in Weimar ) was President of the Chamber of Saxony-Weimar and succeeded Johann Wolfgang Goethe in this office when he went to Italy in 1786.

Schmidt was the son of Christian Andreas Schmidt (1693-1732) and older brother of Klopstock's unfulfilled childhood love Maria Sophia Schmidt (1731-1799), was friends with him in his youth and initially tried his hand as a poet of odors. After attending the Princely School in Pforta , he went to the court in Weimar in 1757 , where he began a career as an official.

Schmidt exchanged letters with Goethe for several years. On August 13, 1786, he informed him from Karlsbad before starting his Italian trip : “Tomorrow I will go on an excursion to Schneeberg . From Dresden I have received permission to drive into the local cobblestone mines, which is an extraordinary perk, as both friends and locals are strictly kept away from it. "
