Johann Cunde (* 1724/1725 in Freetz near Schlawe in Western Pomerania ; † May 12, 1759 in Rastenburg ), latinized Cundeus , was a German theologian and teacher.

Life

Cunde was initially a student at the school for the poor in Stolp . He then seems to have been a student of the high school in Schlawe before he attended the Friedrichskolleg ( Collegium Fridericianum ) in Königsberg as a free student from October 1737 to Easter 1741 . There he was a classmate of Immanuel Kant , who was one of his close friends. David Ruhnken , who had attended grammar school in Schlawe and had come to the Friedrichskolleg at Easter 1739 , also belonged to the circle of friends . Cunde and Ruhnken are said to have known each other from their school days together in Schlawe. Since 1741 Cunde studied theology at the Albertina . The friendship with Kant and Ruhnken continued during this university course. In the winter of 1743/44 Cunde was a teacher at the Fridericianum for half a year. He then worked there as a teacher in the period 1746–1756. Until 1755 he was last employed there as a sub-inspector and as a Vespers preacher. His students praised his excellent teaching skills. The tasks in the various offices that he had to hold were accompanied by an overload of work from which his health suffered. In 1756 he became rector of the grammar school in Rastenburg , East Prussia. Cunde died in Rastenburg at the age of 33.

One of his students at the Fridericianum in Königsberg, Ludwig Ernst von Borowski , who later became a close confidante of Kant, judged Cunde: “Among the teachers of my time, Cunde stands out above all of his time, perhaps above all who were teachers at the institution in a hundred years out. "
